Torso Del Belvedere

A peak In the Vatican Museums

Iliad and the Odyssey

As you come into this room you are immediately stunned by the marble sculpture in the center, the extremely accurate anatomy and the muscle tension and its full tridimensionality.

We are in the room of “Il Torso del Belvedere” in the Vatican Museums. This extraordinary sculpture represents Ajax while contemplating suicide in the epic poem, the “Iliad and the Odyssey”.

On the base of the sculpture you can spot the signature of the artist, Apollonio son of Nestor, Athenian, 1st Cent B.C. It has been a major influence on art ever since it was found in 1432. We can see the influence this marvelous sculpture had on Michelangelo when we visit the Sistine Chapel but also when we look at Rodin’s Sculpture of ”The Thinker”.

It is so impressive!
